Our Chapel_Hill Favorites

Horsemanship for Kids :: White Cross Road, Chapel Hill :: 919.932.9295

Horse play after-school enrichment program provides quality care in farm setting with one teacher/mentor for every 5 children. Horse play also teaches life skills and values to children in a safe, supportive, natural environment. Sissy Nelson helps children build self-esteem, confidence and respect through "Harmonious Horsemanship", creating wonderful, positive equine experiences that children will remember for the rest of their lives! Located in Chapel Hill on White Cross Road

411 West :: 411 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 :: (919) 967-2782

If you are a wine drinker, hit 411 West in Chapel Hill for dinner on Monday night. Bottles of wine from their terrific wine list are 50% off. The food is always good and the people watching is great. After dinner, stroll around town and then duck into the surprisingly quiet and private 3 Cups Coffeehouse in The Courtyard for a pot of French pressed coffee or a pot of tea.

501 Diner :: 1500 N Fordham Blvd, 15-501 Bypass at Eastgate Shopping Center :: (919) 933-3505

501 Diner is my favorite placed for breakfast in Chapel Hill. Slip into a confortable booth and enjoy a cup of rich coffee as you choose from a breakfast selection that ranges from pancakes and waffles to eggs sardou. And if you are inclined to eat southern, they serve a great bowl of grits. This is my favorite place to catch up with old friends who come into town to see the Tar Heels play a ACC rival.

West End (Carrboro) Poets’ Weekend :: Century Center and DSI Comedy Theater, Carrboro, NC ::

The second weekend of October each year in Carrboro, at Carrboro Century Center, poets and enthusiasts of poetry gather and share in the experience of live poetry! Visit http://www.westendpoetsweekend.com for more details. 2008's gathering boasted over 300 participants and 35 poets, performing in genres from theatrical performances, readings, and music through spoken word and slam. There was something for everyone from grades K-5, Middle and High Schoolers and UNC Professors and students. Eight award-winning North Carolina Poets closed out the afternoon session. Our Carrboro and Hillsborough Poet Laureates got the evening started for the evening session at DSI Comedy Theater. The night blocks featured published poets, musical performances, spoken word artist Church da Poet and award winning poetry slam team, SlamCharlotte. Wow! What'll they do for an encore? FYI: Open Eye Cafe, a favorite spot in Carrboro, has open poetry night on the first Tuesday evening of the month beginning October 2, 2007- December 2, 2007 from 7-9 PM.

Crook’s Corner :: 610 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC :: 919-929-7643

Crooks Corner is long recognized and one of the best restaurants among Chapel Hill veterans. In addition to their quality regular fare you are apt to fine local specialties on the menu, berries in Spring, peaches in Summer and, my favorite, persimmon pudding made from local persimmons around Thanksgiving. You can eat in the restaurant but I recommend dining under the stars in their outdoor seating area.

Nice Price Books :: 100 Boyd Street, Chapel Hill, NC :: 919-929-6222

Nice Price Books proudly stands between Chapel Hill and Carrboro and has a strong following among the book loving locals throughout the community. Used books hold a special charm for many of our friends who peruse the shelves for literary treasures. It is a fun way to lose yourself in time for a while. And when you do find a treasure, the prices will be kind to your piggy bank. That is Vicky standing outside.
