Our Chapel_Hill Favorites: We are unabashed enthusiasts for the Carolina lifestyle in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Hillsborough and Pittsboro. Among the many treasures that add to the richness of our lives, here are some of our favorite places, people and events. Drop us line if you have some favorites to add to our list to enrich the lives of newcomers to the area.

Crook’s Corner :: 610 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC :: 919-929-7643

Crook’s Corner Crooks Corner is long recognized and one of the best restaurants among Chapel Hill veterans. In addition to their quality regular fare you are apt to fine local specialties on the menu, berries in Spring, peaches in Summer and, my favorite, persimmon pudding made from local persimmons around Thanksgiving. You can eat in the restaurant but I recommend dining under the stars in their outdoor seating area.

Chapel Hill Fourth of July Celebration :: Kenan Memorial Stadium, UNC_Chapel Hill Campus, Chapel Hill, NC :: 919-968-2784

Chapel Hill Fourth of July Celebration Celebrate July 4th with an evening of fireworks and family entertainment. The Town of Chapel Hill's annual July 4th Celebration will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 4 at UNC's Kenan Memorial Stadium. Fireworks are only visible from inside the stadium, so plan to arrive early to get a good seat.

Nice Price Books :: 100 Boyd Street, Chapel Hill, NC :: 919-929-6222

Nice Price Books Nice Price Books proudly stands between Chapel Hill and Carrboro and has a strong following among the book loving locals throughout the community. Used books hold a special charm for many of our friends who peruse the shelves for literary treasures. It is a fun way to lose yourself in time for a while. And when you do find a treasure, the prices will be kind to your piggy bank. That is Vicky standing outside.

Carrboro Murals :: Carrboro, NC ::

Carrboro Murals Take a walk around Carrboro and you will discover art on the walls and well cared for vintage homes. And you will find a lot of other people out enjoying their town, it is that kind of community.

411 West :: 411 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 :: (919) 967-2782

411 West If you are a wine drinker, hit 411 West in Chapel Hill for dinner on Monday night. Bottles of wine from their terrific wine list are 50% off. The food is always good and the people watching is great. After dinner, stroll around town and then duck into the surprisingly quiet and private 3 Cups Coffeehouse in The Courtyard for a pot of French pressed coffee or a pot of tea.

The Lantern :: 423 West Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC :: (919) 969-8846

The Lantern The Lantern is one of my favorite Asian restaurants in Chapel Hill. Andrea Reusing and her brother Brendan Reusing are the chef-owners of Lantern. Their goal is to present simple, authentic Asian food with the freshest available Ingredients. The striking dining room and bar were designed by N.C. native (and current NYC resident) David Doernberg, an old friend and designer working in the film and television industry. The Lantern opened in 2002.

Weaver Street Market & Cafe :: 101 E Weaver St, Carrboro NC 27510 :: (919) 929-0010

Weaver Street Market & Cafe The hot and cold food bars offer heart-healthy, fresh, organic dishes. Sample a buffet of international cuisines; sit and eat, or grab your meal and go. Great greens and beans, pastas, vegetables--some with an Asian or Mexican flair--complete the veggie heaven; the market also sells chicken, fish and other non-vegetarian items. For a nominal fee, you can become an owner of Weaver Street, receiving a discount and sharing in dividends. Or volunteer a few hours a week for a bigger discount. Feng shui workshops, creative art shows, healthy gourmet cooking classes and other educational opportunities are offered.

501 Diner :: 1500 N Fordham Blvd, 15-501 Bypass at Eastgate Shopping Center :: (919) 933-3505

501 Diner 501 Diner is my favorite placed for breakfast in Chapel Hill. Slip into a confortable booth and enjoy a cup of rich coffee as you choose from a breakfast selection that ranges from pancakes and waffles to eggs sardou. And if you are inclined to eat southern, they serve a great bowl of grits. This is my favorite place to catch up with old friends who come into town to see the Tar Heels play a ACC rival.
